New Addition to the Collection – Harpsichord Pleyel „Grand Modèle de Concert” – Wanda Landowska 1928

Pleyel Cembalo - Wanda Landowska - Grand Modèle de Concert, Paris 1828 - Eric Feller Collection (1)

March 2025

Wanda Landowska (1879–1959) was one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century and played a major role in the revival of the harpsichord. Her name is inextricably linked with the prestigious instrument manufacturer Pleyel and the harpsichord renaissance in the early 20th century. The collaboration between Wanda Landowska and Pleyel led to the development of an innovative harpsichord model. This newly designed instrument became the defining prototype for modern harpsichord construction in the 20th century and served as a frequently replicated reference model, although its qualitative standards were never fully matched. Pleyel drew inspiration from historical instruments to enhance harpsichord construction. The goal was not merely to replicate a historical instrument but to further develop and refine the harpsichord.

In February 2025, a Pleyel harpsichord made in 1928 was acquired for the collection and is now available online.
